WADESBORO — Over a hundred members of Anson County’s graduating 2020 class were honored by Harvest Ministries during their drive-thru cookout held on Saturday, May 9.

Each senior that attended the drive-thru was provided with a standard cookout meal consisting of a hot dog or hamburger, chips, cookie, and drink along with a t-shirt and banner with their face printed on it.

The banners were contributed by Latisha Griffin, a parent of a graduating senior. Harvest Ministries provided the funds to purchase the materials required to make the banners. The banners were displayed along Highway 74 prior to the event.

In addition to the meal, t-shirt, and banners, a few seniors received a Class of 2020 Bobble-Head Doll provided by Anson County resident Tomasina Rivers. These dolls were given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“We had a great turnout with a lot of parental support,” said Harvest Ministries Lead Pastor Steve Adams.

People from all over Anson County volunteered at the cookout, including area politicians and religious leaders. Timmy Watkins, Mayor of Morven, and County Commissioner candidate Robert Mims manned the grills.

Wadesboro Police Chief Thedis Spencer was also present at the cookout with a banner over a police vehicle congratulating the seniors.

Other volunteers included staff from local non-profit organization HOLLA. Leon Gatewood, Director of HOLLA, was the DJ during the cookout.

Pastor Rodney Moore of Kesler Chapel AME Zion Church and Pastor Michael McLeod of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Pastor also volunteered their time to the event.

Local businesses and organizations that contributed to the cookout included KFC of Wadesboro, Piedmont Propane, Whitt’s Convenience Store, and Anson Signs, and The Anson County Chamber of Commerce.

“There were a plethora of different people that helped out,” explained Adams. “Parents donated. Hundreds of people gave online to purchase the items for the cookout. It was a true testament to those seniors that we were able to come together and make something happen that they will remember for the rest of their life. It would not have been possible without all the help from the people of Anson County.”
