Dozens of children were recognized at the Anson County Board of Education meeting March 21.
The room was packed beyond seating capacity for the first portion of the meeting as children and their family, coaches, teachers, principals and friends waited for the kids to be called up front by county Superintendent Michael Freeman.
Freeman said the large crowd was encouraging.
“This tells me that we’ve got some high-flying students in this room who work hard consistently, and you or the team you’re affiliated with gets recognition for your commitment,” Freeman said.
The board gave certificates to spelling bee winners. Caroline Grace Thacker was not present but was named the first-place winner in the Anson County Spelling Bee. Freeman also presented certificates to runners-up from several schools.
The wrestling team at Anson Middle School was recognized for its 8-1 season record. Both the top wrestlers and the team were recognized.
“This is a great accomplishment through hard work, and we appreciate it,” Freeman said, congratulating each player.
The school’s boys and girls basketball teams were also recognized. The boys’ team made it through the first round of the playoffs this year. Freeman congratulated the girls’ team on having a successful season.
As they were called up, Freeman asked the students to point out their supporters who came with them to the meeting.
When several students noted that their parents or guardians were waiting in the car or at home, Freeman said regardless of where the supporters were, their importance to the children was obvious.
“I don’t care if your mother’s in the car or in the room, the love they have for you shows on your faces,” Freeman said. “So even though they may not’ve been able to come in this room tonight for various legitimate reasons, somebody has supported you and we are proud of you.”
The superintendent said that recognition is the “fun” part of the education meetings.
“It’s always fun when parents and family members and school folks get to come in and join us as we recognize some of our students for various accomplishments,” he said.
