Deadline is 3 p.m. the Thursday before publication. Calendar items must be complete and correct when submitted. Items must be submitted on 8½ by 11-inch (standard typing size) paper and include a contact telephone number.

April 20-24

Tractor Supply in Wadesboro will hold the spring clover promotion to benefit Anson County 4-H. Clovers are $1 and can be purchased at checkout. Anson County 4-H’ers will be at the store April 23 for extra goodies.

April 20-July 22

Anson County Parks and Recreation will hold registration for youth tackle football for children in grades 3-4 and 5-6. If enough children in those grades register, the county will host its own league. In the event that there are only enough players for one team, the team will abide by the following rules. A player is eligible to compete in Division 1 if he or she did not turn 8 years old on or before Nov. 1, 2015 and does not turn 10 on or before May 1, 2016. Players are eligible to compete in Division 2 if they turned 10 on or before Nov. 1, 2015 and do not turn 12 on or before May 1, 2016. The cost is $30 per person. A copy of a sports physical and a birth certificate are also due by the deadline. Registration will be held at the Parks and Rec office and at county schools on select dates. Registration will be held in the gym of Wadesboro Elementary School from 2-3:30 p.m. May 17, at Wadesboro Primary School from 2-3:30 p.m. May 18, and at Peachland-Polkton Elementary School from 2-3:30 p.m. May 19. Children will also be able to register at Ansonville Elementary School from 2-3:30 p.m. May 24, at the ball field at Lilesville Elementary School from 2-3:30 p.m. May 25, and at Morven Elementary School from 2-3:30 p.m. May 26. Beginning April 21, Grace Senior Center’s Dancercise exercise program will return to its regular schedule of every being held from 10-11 a.m. every Monday instead of from 1-2 p.m.

The Anson Singers will present its annual spring concert at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Wadesboro. The concert, entitled “The Sound of Poetry,” will feature renowned poems in a tapestry of choral settings. This is a free concert open to the public. The Anson Singers is a community choir with members from various communities throughout Anson, Stanly, Union and Chesterfield counties.

The Anson Women’s League will accept scholarship applications until April 29. The club will award $500 scholarships to three college-bound female graduates from Anson County this year. Applications will be judged primarily on academic achievement and financial need. Evidence of students’ involvement and leadership in clubs, churches, extracurricular activities and charitable service to the community is welcome. A written essay addressing these activities will provide further support in the evaluation process. Finalists will be interviewed by the scholarship committee. May 4

In recognition of Child Mental Health Awareness Week, the Art Restores the Soul event will be held at the Anson County Cooperative Extension office from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event is open to ages 8 and up and all registered participants will leave with a 16-by-20 painting they created. Artist Cassie Dawson, a senior at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, has studied art for five years. She has had her artwork displayed in an exhibition at UNC-Pembroke for Cape Fear High School’s Juried Art Show, and recently had three pieces in the 16th annual Cumberland County High Schools Juried Art Exhibition, where she won third place overall for mixed media. May 5

The Wadesboro Civitan Club will offer four $1,000 scholarships this year. Applicants will be judged in four areas: academic achievement, community involvement, leadership and financial need. Submissions must address all four areas and will be viewed favorably if applicants demonstrate participation in those activities of interest to Civitans or similar activities. The application can be supplemented with written descriptions of activities, interests and related experience. Criteria for applicants also include: a sealed letter of recommendation from someone other than a relative, Anson County 2016 graduation and acceptance at, or enrollment in, a college/university or other acceptable institution of higher education, including copies of acceptance letters. Applications must be completed and returned by May 5. Applications should be returned to a school guidance counselor or mailed to: P.O. Box 751, Wadesboro, NC 28170. Applications will be reviewed by the Wadesboro Civitan Scholarship Committee and announced at the Anson High School awards ceremony. Finalist candidates should be prepared to appear for a personal interview in middle to late May. The scholarships are paid directly to the academic institution where the recipient is enrolled.

May 7

The annual May Day Festival will be held at the Lemuel Center in Morven beginning at 10 a.m. The event will begin with the opening ceremony and afterward there will be several scheduled activities: step team performances, a puppet show, a May Pole wrapping, a car show, a basketball tournament and others. Several food vendors will be on the grounds. The day will conclude with the May Fest parade at 3 p.m. with about 30 units. The Lemuel Center is located at 206 W. Main St., Morven.

May 12

Woodmen Life, Wadesboro Chapter 4, a fraternal life insurance society, will accept applications for college scholarships until May 12. The scholarship committee will award $500 scholarships to two class of 2016 graduates in the Anson County schools. Academic achievement and financial need will be considered, as will fraternal, social and patriotic activities. Seniors can get a Woodmen Life scholarships application form through their school guidance counselors. It should be completed and returned to the counselor by May 12. Awards will be presented at the high school awards ceremony.

May 14

Registration is under way for the Yard Sale of the Carolinas, which will be held in Chesterfield, South Carolina from 7 a.m. to noon in the 200 and 300 blocks of West Main Street in front of the Chesterfield County Courthouse. Individuals, families, civic groups and churches are welcome to raise funds by selling items in the yard sale. Spaces are available for $15 (one parking space), and multiple spaces may be reserved. There are a limited number of spaces available. Registration forms are available at the Hospice of Chesterfield County offices located at 700 West Blvd. in Chesterfield, 160 Second St. in Cheraw and 114 E. McGregor St. in Pageland. Grace Senior Center will sponsor a trip to the Amish lands in Pennsylvania. The cost of the trip is $340 per person with double occupancy (adults), $299 per child staying with two full paying adults. The package includes two nights’ lodging at the Heritage Hotel in Lancaster, two full buffet breakfasts, two buffet dinners at Shady Maple Smorgasbord, a performance of “Samson” at the Millennium Theatre, a guided tour of the Amish countryside, including stops at the Amish Craft Farm and a bake shop, a visit to the Kitchen Kettle Village, shopping at Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market, a souvenir gift, luggage handling, taxes and gratuities, and motorcoach transportation. June through August

South Piedmont Community College will hold several summer camp courses this year. These day camp courses are educational ways to keep teenagers engaged throughout the summer. SPCC staff and faculty will help students to learn more about the programs the school offers in Union and Anson counties. This year, SPCC will offer the following camps at the Monroe, Polkton and Waxhaw locations: Arts, Health/EMT, Cyber Camp, Solar and Energy, Intro to Auto Mechanics, Construction Trades, Advanced Manufacturing, Leadership Camp and others. Costs range from $0 to $100 depending on the course of study and duration. All camps include instruction, lunch, t-shirts and more. June 13-24

The Ansonia Theatre will host the first session of its summer camp with a two-week camp held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. that will focus on putting a show together covering all aspects of the state. Participants will workshop their own adaptation of the classic, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” with a community performance on June 24. Tuition is $100. Applications are available at the Anson County Arts Council.

July 1

Money for the Bowman Senior High School class of 1984 all-white gala is due by the end of the day. The gala will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 3 at the Lockhart-Taylor Center in Wadesboro. The Ansonia Theatre will host the second session of its summer camp with a one-week musical theatre camp held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The camp will focus on singing and dancing creating a big musical revue. This summer, the kids will tackle Broadway songs sung by adults. The camp will be directed by Tommy Wooten, Gina Clarke and Gail Litaker. Tuition is $50. Greene St., Wadesboro. An interactive reader will share books, sing songs and foster a love for reading through activities appropriate for young learners. Senior Health Insurance Information Program needs dedicated volunteers to continue to offer its services to seniors in Anson County.
