Ansonia High’s Aalyiah Gainey, Jordyn Kiser, Jamya Covington and Neveah Lilly finished fourth in the 800 meter relay at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A indoor track championship Feb. 9.
The unit was one of several entries to place in the top eight for the Bobcats.
Talia Marshall placed fifth in shot put; Kimyada Jackson placed sixth in shot put; Jaliyah Wall placed seventh in the triple jump, and eighth in long jump; Tyrek Hardison placed seventh in triple jump; and Jaquavius Booker placed seventh in the 55 meter hurdles.
“The kids completed hard and some had personal records,” said head coach James Wall. “We could have performed a little better in some events but overall, I was pleased with the efforts.”
Wall added that the team enjoyed the experience, and the relay team was excited to have medaled.
“We fell short of some of our goals, and we will continue to grow as a team for outdoor track, but all of our kids finished in the top eight.
“The only other thing that we could have done differently would have been to prepare on an actual track.”
The Anson track has been under construction since the late summer of last year.
“We will have more coaches on staff for outdoor, which will allow us to cover more area, giving our team more room for growth,” Wall said. “Everyone has to buy in and continue to work hard because we have not reached our fullest potential, and I know that we have some quality athletes that can and will compete at the highest level.
“The community can become more involved by supporting our young athletes, and encourage their kids to give track and field a try because track benefits a lot of the other sports.”
Wall added that he “encourages everyone to come out and support our teams.”
