Although PeopleFest organizers tried to keep the street festival going on Saturday, torrential downpours caused the cancellation of all events after noon.

Town Manager Alex Sewell made the call after the festival had gone on for about three hours, despite heavy rain.

The festival started off with the Wadesboro Police Department’s Escape the Zombies 5K at around 8 a.m. A couple dozen runners took to the course, being chased by zombies all the way. The rain started to fall about halfway through the race, and only let up in brief spurts before the deluge began after 11 a.m.

Because of the rain, only seven of the 14 registered took part in the Discover Anson Bike Ride. “Six of the seven actually did the longest portion of the bike ride, even though it was raining,” said Chamber of Commerce executive assistant Shelby Emrich.

The opening ceremony was scheduled for 10:30 a.m., but actually took place closer to 11.

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts presented the nation’s colors, and led the audience through the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and the Scouts’ code of honor.

The Wadesboro Town Council had deemed Saturday Ed McBride Day, in honor of his many contributions to the town.

McBride designed both the town seal and PeopleFest logo, Mayor Bill Thacker said, and has regularly written a column for The Express. The mayor read the resolution that the town council passed at its most recent meeting, and added, “The 30th PeopleFest recognizes him and his enduring acts for the town of Wadesboro.”

Other activities planned for PeopleFest included a pet costume contest, live music and a fireworks display. Food vendors did serve a few meals to those who attended before Sewell and other organizers decided to cancel the festival.

“Due to current conditions and weather forecasts showing the rain only potentially tapering off about 8 p.m. tonight (but not ending), all PeopleFest activities are unfortunately being canceled,” the town of Wadesboro posted on its Facebook page at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday. “Several food vendors may remain open. The decision is being made now so that the band can be rescheduled for another date so everyone can enjoy!”

No decisions had been made regarding the rescheduling of any events by press time.
