Anson County has a new Board of Elections after a brief swearing-in ceremony and meeting on Tuesday morning.

Tracy Little of Polkton was sworn in as the new Democratic Party member of the board, while chair Rochelle Williams and secretary Tracy Baynard retained their seats on the board. Williams and Baynard were also re-elected chair and secretary, respectively.

Little replaces longtime Board of Elections member Freddie Paxton, who was also recognized for his years of service. After Little was sworn in, Anson County Democratic Party Chair Vancine Sturdivant presented him with several gifts from the party.

Once the regular meeting got under way, Board of Elections director Steve Adams reported that during the month of June, there were 17 new voter registrations, two felon removals and eight death removals from the voter rolls.

He also reminded the board of the state conference to be held in Winston Salem in August, as well as the appointment of precinct judges on Aug. 18.

“We will have less precincts this time,” Williams said, referring to the recent consolidation of Wadesboro’s three voting districts. “All three precincts will be voting at the Lockhart-Taylor Center.”

Adams also pointed out that Wadesboro will be the only municipality with early voting in this fall’s Municipal Election.

In other business, Williams stated that the board had been “working diligently” on the Board of Elections’ employee duties, which they needed to sign off on and send to the state Board of Elections.

Williams added that in the future, the board should look at the employee duties before budget time, so that any increases in salary can be presented to the county commissioners before they approve that year’s budget.

The Board of Elections also voted to keep its meeting times to the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m., with meetings mandated by the N.C. Board of Elections from time to time.
