Service dog trained to help elementary school
WADESBORO — Anson High School students are training the school system’s newest therapy dog, Nyla.
Nyla will help students at Wadesboro Elementary School build confidence in reading skills. Nyla is learning her behavior training very fast and students have enjoyed the process, according to the high school.
“We’re training the dog to be obedient, to listen to us, and to stay well behaved,” said a student in the Facebook video about Nyla’s training.
Wadesboro Elementary School (WES) was approached by Nyla’s owner about collaborating.
“WES prioritized students who are developing foundational literacy skills to have small groups and one-on-one read-aloud sessions with Nyla,” said WES Principal Daniel Burrows. “The impact Nyla has had on students at WES has been immense in more ways than one. Students have built confidence in their reading abilities by practicing with Nyla, who loves to hear them read.”
“The impact any single happy moment can have in the life of a child is hard to measure, but each student leaves the classroom after visiting with Nyla wearing a smile,” Burrows continued. “For some, that is everything.”
