Teachers invited to apply for Kenan fellowships

Pee Dee Electric is teaming up with the Kenan Fellows program to offer K-12 teachers within its seven-county service territory a chance to work alongside its team of industry experts.

The program was established in 2000 as an initiative of the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science at N.C. State University. The program fosters collaboration between K-12 educators, science, technology, engineering and math professionals, philanthropic organizations, universities, museums, businesses and industries across North Carolina to drive innovations in education and inspire future generations of great thinkers, leaders and inventors.

“Pee Dee Electric understands the importance of education and the opportunities that are afforded to individuals from attaining a solid educational foundation,” said CEO Donnie Spivey. “Even more so, we understand the impact that excellence in education can have on a community.”

Pee Dee Electric said its support helps to create more professional learning opportunities for exceptional K-12 educators across the state. A core goal of the Kenan Fellows program is to develop effective teacher leaders who serve as advocates for excellence in education. Key components of the program are a three-week summer teacher internship with a mentor in a research setting or local industry, like Pee Dee Electric.

Teachers selected as Kenan fellows receive 80 hours of professional development to support them as they develop innovative lessons for students, lead professional development for their colleagues and design community-engagement activities. These educational resources and programs are shared with other educators and used in classrooms, school systems and communities throughout the state and beyond.

In addition to the internship and professional development, the selected educator will receive a $5,000 award to help cover travel expenses. The fellowship requires a one-year commitment and educators remain in the classroom while completing the requirements.

Using the experience and training provided by the program, educators develop and implement innovative, one-of-a-kind educational curricula for students, professional development for their colleagues and design community-engagement activities.

Online applications for 2016-17 fellowships are open until Jan. 18 at www.kenanfellows.org. The 2016-17 Kenan fellows will be named in early May.
