Anson County prepared for its part of a winter storm that walloped the East Coast last week and into the weekend.

The county saw sleet and freezing rain beginning on Friday. Saturday brought a small amount of snow, but Sunday’s higher temperatures melted a large amount of the slush.

Wadesboro police said they had responded to four weather-related wrecks that required the fire department to be dispatched as of 3:45 p.m. Friday. Total numbers of weekend crashes and emergency calls in Anson County were not available in time for this story.

Although several main roads were clear on Saturday, though still wet and able to re-freeze, more rural roads were icy as late as Monday. This prompted the schools to announce a three-hour delay Monday morning. On Monday afternoon, the schools announced via Facebook that while the schools would have a normal schedule Tuesday morning, there was a possibility of “limited bus routes in a few rural areas.”

South Piedmont Community College kept its normal schedule Monday, though it advised on its Facebook page that “employees and students should use their own judgement and caution when making the decision to travel or not.”

The Anson County Board of Education moved its meeting from 5:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday to help attendees avoid driving on icy roads that night.

Both Anson County and the town of Wadesboro closed their offices on Friday due to the storm.

Some county customers did lose power during the storm, according to outage maps provided by Duke Energy and Pee Dee Electric. While several surrounding counties, including Stanly, Mecklenburg and South Carolina’s York and Lancaster counties, still reported Duke customers out of power out as of 3 p.m. Monday, neither power company reported outages in Anson on Monday.
