Anson County’s newest manager, Barron S. Monroe II, was selected in a 4-1 vote at the December county commissioners meeting.

Commissioner Lawrence Gatewood stated that he couldn’t vote for Monroe because he had not seen his resume or application.

Monroe’s position as Anson County manager will begin Jan. 2. Interim manager Rita James will finish out the rest of the year.

Monroe comes to the county with a varied career in public service.

He has worked with AmeriCorps in Detroit, Michigan, served in the Navy, and worked as both a budget and management analyst and project manager for Catawba County.

Monroe has earned a master’s in public administration and a master’s in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He did his undergraduate work in history at Appalachian State.

Monroe said he excitedly looks forward to working for and with the citizens, commissioners, county staff and community partners to enhance quality of life here in Anson County.

“Thank you so much for the time you’ve given me,” Monroe said to the county commissioners and those who’ve helped him prepare for the job.

Monroe’s family attended the December meeting to support him in the voting of the county manager position.

“I would like to thank my family,” Monroe said. “Those are the people I work hard for; those are the people I want to make proud.”

Monroe went on to say, “Thank you for the opportunity. I look forward to it.”
