Ten members of the Morven Chapter of Las Amigas, Inc. traveled to the Hilton at University Place in Charlotte Wednesday, June 26, to attend the 59th annual Conclave of the National Organization of Las Amigas, Inc.

Local members in attendance were Elizabeth Kersey, Joletha Little, Pat McCoy, Arnnette Taylor, Shunee McRae, Samantha Douglas, Judy Simon, Beulah Pratt, Winnie Bennett, and Marilynn Bennett. While there, the organization received several awards.

The theme of the Conclave, “Connecting and Renewing Our Commitment for Greater Service in Our Communities,” guided the five day affair.

According to the press release, Thursday, members attended workshops on subjects such as Financial Training, Strengthening the Bonds of Sisterhood, Leadership at a Glance, and National Partnership Initiatives. During the Thursday evening Town Hall Meeting of members, Elizabeth Kersey, President of the Morven Chapter of Las Amigas, Incorporated presided over the introduction of Candidates for the annual Queen’s Contest.

Friday began with a Harambee breakfast, where members showed up in authentic African attire.

“Harambee” is a Kenyan word meaning “all pull together,” and Senator Joyce Waddell, who represents North Carolina Senate District 40, and who is also a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Chapter of Las Amigas, Incorporated, spoke enthusiastically on that subject.

Following the breakfast, several meetings were held where the business of the national organization was transacted. On Saturday’s event was the Dora R. Mason Awards Luncheon convened. During this luncheon, several awards were presented to deserving members of the group.

The local chapter (Morven) received several awards. For the first time in its 32 year history, the Morven Chapter brought home the Lorraine Walker Attendance Award for having the most members in attendance.

Joletha Little, Morven Chapter Treasurer, received the Runner-up Award for the Dora R. Mason Outstanding Member.

Three members were awarded Thirty Year Service Awards: Elizabeth Kersey, Joletha Little, and Pat McCoy.

The annual Conclave concluded with the Mary Q. Moore Orchid Ball, where the National Queen is also crowned and all chapters are recognized.

Las Amigas, Incorporated is a national, civic, women’s organization whose primary goal is to work to enhance the lives of the citizens of their respective communities. The Morven Chapter has been in existence since 1987.
