LETTER: Protect environment for future generations

To the editor:

Rep. Richard Hudson: I was pleased to read about your new son in the Anson Record and the good work you have been doing in several important areas of government.

However, in light of the recent extreme weather events and the unanimous world recognition of climate change plus the catastrophes we are already beginning to endure, we respectfully request that you drop the old fossil fuel industry mantra of more pollution means fewer jobs and higher energy bills for the poor. Who cares about jobs on a dying planet?

I trust you love your new baby as much as we love our 10 grandchildren who live in Monroe. Both the oldest and the youngest boys have asthma and other allergies. Both have improved dramatically since Charlotte and Duke coal have been following better state and federal environmental mandates. No more Code “Bad Air” days this summer. I checked with the Deparment of Air Quality, and yes, the coal winds generally blow from west to east out to Monroe and Wadesboro where we live!

Please follow the EPA guidelines and insist on more regulation, not less. Here in North Carolina, our near-sighted legislators have gone so far as to remove air quality monitors and declare sea level rise “unmentionable.” Talk about heads in the sand!

We owe our children clean air, water and earth as the best inheritance/Christmas gift we can bring. Perhaps you can contact Jay Faison of Clear Path in Charlotte. He is a millionaire Republican who believes in saving our earth. This is not a partisan or political issue. We can either act like drug addicts, burning and trashing their homes, or like caring, loving adults who value our children’s future and act accordingly!

Deb and Arne Arnason
