An inmate at Brown Creek Correctional Institution escaped early Saturday morning, only to be captured Sunday night in Davidson County. Kristopher McNeil, 29, was serving a 14-year sentence for second-degree murder. He was scheduled for release in 2018.
Law enforcement believed that McNeil was headed to Forsyth County, since he has family and friends in Winston Salem.
McNeil was captured, thanks to tips from several citizens who recognized him from his photo in media reports and called law enforcement. Davidson County deputies picked McNeil up walking along old Highway 52 near Hickory Tree Road near the Davidson/Forsyth county line just before 11 p.m. Sunday.
He will be transported to Central Prison in Raleigh.
“We appreciate the many law enforcement agencies working closely by the department’s side working to get McNeil back in custody,” said George Solomon, Director of Prisons. “We are especially grateful to the citizens who called in tips and anyone who aided in his capture without anyone getting hurt.”
It was revealed Sunday afternoon that a corrections officer, Kendra Lynette Miller, 33, had a relationship with McNeil and aided him in his escape. A joint investigation by the Department of Public Safety, the SBI and the Polkton Police Department led to charges against Miller, including sex with an inmate, providing an electronic device to an inmate, harboring a fugitive and aiding and abetting a fugitive. She was arrested and placed under a $500,000 bond.
Miller had been a food service officer at Brown Creek since December 2014.
Solomon released the following statement after Miller’s arrest: “Unprofessional conduct by correctional staff will not be tolerated. We will pursue criminal charges and support prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”
