Candidate filing for the March primary ended on Monday afternoon, with many incumbents filing for re-election and some new names appearing on the ballot.

COMMISSIONERS

The county Board of Commissioners has four seats open for election in Districts 1, 3, 6 and 7, currently held by Bobby Sikes, Ross Streater, Jarvis Woodburn and Harold Smith, respectively.

Incumbent Bobby Sikes, a Wadesboro Democrat, is vying to retain his seat and hold off a challenge from Mechell Ann Roberts Turner, a Peachland Republican, in District 1.

Sikes is completing his 12th year in office.

In District 3, incumbent Ross Streater, D-Morven, is running against newcomer Sylvester Bennett, D-Morven.

Streater has held his seat for 27 years.

Incumbent Jarvis T. Woodburn, D-Wadesboro, is the only candidate who filed for election in District 6.

Incumbent Harold C. Smith, D-Wadesboro, was the sole candidate to file for District 7.

SCHOOL BOARD

There are four school board seats open, one each in Districts 1, 3, 6, and 7. They are currently held by Mike Turner, Beulah Pratt, Frank Liles and Carol Ann Gibson, respectively.

Three candidates are running for the District 1 seat: incumbent Mike Turner, D-Wadesboro, and newcomers Shane Drake, D-Wadesboro, and Patty Williams, D-Polkton.

Turner is completing his third term.

Beulah Pratt, D-Morven, was the sole candidate to file for her current seat in District 3.

Incumbent Frank Liles, D-Wadesboro, will fight for his seat in District 6 against Michael A. Livingston, D-Wadesboro.

Carol Ann Gibson, D-Wadesboro, was the only candidate who filed for her currently held District 7 seat on the board.

REGISTER OF DEEDS

Joanne S. Huntley, D-Wadesboro, was the only candidate who filed for her seat, which she has held since 1999.

U.S. SENATE

Sen. Richard Burr of Winston-Salem will face Republican primary challengers Paul Wright of Dudley, Larry Holmquist of Greensboro and Greg Brannon of Cary.

Vying to take on Burr in the general election are Democratic candidates Deborah K. Ross of Raleigh, Kevin D. Griffin of Durham, Chris Rey of Spring Lake and Ernest T. Reeves of Greenville.

Libertarian candidate Sean Haugh of Durham is also in the running.

U.S. HOUSE

Incumbent Rep. Richard Hudson, R-Concord, will face Thomas Mills, D-Carrboro in this election for North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District, which includes Anson, Montgomery, Richmond, Scotland and Stanly counties and parts of Cabarrus, Davidson, Mecklenburg, Randolph, Robeson , Rowan and Union counties.

Hudson is completing his second term.

N.C. SENATE

Incumbent Sen. Tom McInnis, R-Richmond, will face Anson County resident Dannie M. Montgomery, a Lilesville Democrat, in November for the Senate District 25 seat.

N.C. HOUSE

Incumbent Rep. Mark Brody, R-Union, will face Marshville Democrat Kim Hargett in the general election.

Brody is completing his second state House term.

GOVERNOR

Gov. Pat McCrory faces a primary challenge from fellow Republicans C. Robert Brawley of Mooresville and Charles Kenneth Moss of Randleman.

Attorney General Roy Cooper and former legislator and transportation board member Ken Spaulding will face off in the Democratic primary for the right to run against McCrory in November.

Libertarian candidate Lon Cecil of High Point will also seek the state’s Executive Mansion.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Incumbent Dan Forest, R-Raleigh, will not face a primary in 2016.

Democratic candidates Linda Coleman of Knightdale, Ronald L. Newton of Durham, Robert Earl Wilson of Cary and Holly Jones of Asheville are vying for their party’s nomination.

Greensboro Libertarian J.J. Summerell will advance to the November ballot with no primary opponent.

N.C. ATTORNEY GENERAL

Incumbent Roy Cooper is vacating his post to challenge McCrory in the governor’s race.

Two Republicans — state Sen. Buck Newton of Wilson, and prosecutor Jim O’Neill of Winston-Salem — face a primary in the race along with two Democrats — state Sen. Josh Stein of Raleigh and Marcus W. Williams of Lumberton.

N.C. COURT OF APPEALS JUDGE

Incumbent Linda Stephens of Raleigh is running against Phil Berger Jr. of Hillsborough for her seat as a North Carolina Court of Appeals judge.

Incumbent Richard Dietz of Winston-Salem is fighting for his seat against Vince Rozier of Raleigh.

Valerie Zachary of Yadkinville is running against Rickye McKoy-Mitchell of Charlotte.

DISTRICT COURT JUDGES

In District 16A, which includes Anson County, incumbents Richard T. Brown of Laurinburg, Tanya T. Wallace of Rockingham, Michael (Mike) Stone of Raeford, Lisa Blue Thacker of Polkton and Amanda L. (Amy) Wilson of Rockingham all filed for re-election.

Stone is running against Angela J. Carter of Shannon.

N.C. AUDITOR

Incumbent Beth A. Wood, a Raleigh Democrat, is running against Chuck Stuber, a Republican from Raleigh, to retain her position.

N.C. COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE

Incumbent Steve Troxler, R-Summit, is facing Andy Stevens, R-Greensboro, and Walter Smith, D-Yadkinville, in this election.

N.C. COMMISSIONER OF INSURANCE

Incumbent Wayne Goodwin, a Democrat and Richmond County native, will not face a primary challenge.

Republicans vying for the right to oppose Goodwin in November are Mike Causey of Greensboro, Ronald Pierce of Charlotte and Joe McLaughlin of Jacksonville.

N.C. COMMISSIONER OF LABOR

Incumbent Cherie Berry, R-Newton, is fighting to keep her seat against Charles Meeker, D-Raleigh, and Mazie Furguson, D-Greensboro.

N.C. SECRETARY OF STATE

Incumbent Elaine Marshall, D-Lillington, will face the winner of a Republican primary between A.J. Daoud of Pilot Mountain and Michael LaPaglia of Durham.

SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

Incumbent June Atkinson, D-Raleigh, faces a primary challenge from Durham Democrat Henry J. Pankey.

Three Republicans — Mark Johnson of Winston-Salem, Rosemary Stein of Snow Camp and J. Wesley Sills of Dunn — are also seeking the state superintendent post.

N.C. TREASURER

Incumbent State Treasurer Janet Cowell is not seeking re-election.

Republican Dale R. Folwell of Winston-Salem will advance to the general election to meet the winner of a Democratic primary between Ron Elmer of Cary and Dan Blue III of Raleigh.

Early voting will be held from March 3-12 at the Anson County Board of Elections, located at 402 Morven Road, Wadesboro. Primary elections will be held on March 15.
