POLKTON — It was all wags and smiles during a Saturday meet-and-greet at the Anson County animal shelter.

Guests showed their support for the shelter not only by attending, but by donating cash and much-needed supplies. Maureen Lett and Misty Hogan headed up the fundraiser, which brought in $1,602, replenished the shelter’s supply of pet food, treats and litter and even resulted in an adoption.

The meet-and-greet was a chance for community members to see firsthand what the shelter’s needs are, see how many dogs and cats are there and learn about the spay and neuter program. Guests were able to take a tour through the shelter, participate in raffles, get their faces painted and buy a cupcake and a hot dog lunch.

“They need everybody in the county to support them and show up for events like this and show their support,” Beth Ricketts said. “Even if you’re not able to adopt a dog, just come and give and support.”

Volunteers and supplies are always welcome at the Polkton shelter, officials said. Some supplies that are always needed include bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels, dog treats, dog food, blankets, leashes and collars.

People who want to volunteer their time are welcome to help clean kennels, walk dogs and just spend time with the animals to provide human contact.

Saturday’s event was just one of many fundraisers being planned for the shelter. Hogan, one of the fundraising leaders, said boosters want to put on one fundraiser a month through the summer and that they are coordinating with Tractor Supply Co. of Wadesboro to hold an animal adoption day there one weekend each month.

“We want people to look and come through the shelter,” said Lett, who headed up the Saturday fundraiser. “You know, there is a lot of stigma with the shelter. People were really down on the shelter for a while. You know, it’s moved forward 110 percent based on all the volunteers in here helping clean stuff and helping do stuff. We wouldn’t be where we’re at without the volunteers and everybody.”
