WSOC-TV Channel 9 meteorologists John Ahrens and Christine Rapp spoke to roughly 100 earth and environmental science students at Anson High School on April 6.
Students are currently learning about weather and climate in the classroom. Ahrens and Rapp shared their experiences with hurricanes, tornadoes and some possible reasons for weather patterns and climate changes. They also discussed how particular weather conditions in one area of the earth — such as El Niño — can affect the remainder of the planet.
“Firsthand exposure with these professionals provided conversation for students that may have an interest a career in meteorology and/or broadcast journalism,” Anson High career development coordinator Kimberly Ingold said in an email.
Ahrens and Rapp discussed their background including education and skills needed in the industry. Students had the opportunity to look inside WSOC’s Storm Cam vehicle, which is designed to share weather conditions in various areas wuth Channel 9 viewers.
“Both students and staff enjoyed their visit and look forward to many more in the future,” Ingold said.
