LANDIS — Correctional officers and K-9s sniffed out an escaped inmate roughly 12 hours after he ran away from the minimum-security unit at Brown Creek Correctional Institution in Anson County.

N.C. Department of Public Safety spokesman Keith Acree said 22-year-old Devin Allen Brown was captured in a wooded area in the Rowan County town of Landis shortly after noon Wednesday. He had escaped from the Polkton prison around midnight.

Brown was serving a sentence of roughly 5 years on a Rowan County conviction of habitual impaired driving. He was transferred to Brown Creek from Tabor Correctional Institution on Feb. 18 and was scheduled for release in March 2019.

Records show Brown previously served prison time on convictions of Level 1 driving while impaired, assault, larceny and trespassing and had received probation on felony breaking and entering, speeding and drug charges, all in Rowan County.
