ANSON — During the public comment portion of the county commissioners’ board meeting last Tuesday, Henrietta Barringer addressed commissioners, requesting a resurrection of Monday prayer meetings in the county.

A long-held tradition, Anson’s citizens would gather on the corner of the town square on Monday nights to come together as a community and pray for each other, prior to the COVID pandemic.

“Now we would like to get started back with all pastors and anyone that want to come, ministers, and come and pray at 5:00 p.m. on every Monday out of the month,” Barringer said.

Suggesting the town gazebo as an ideal community gathering spot, Barringer reasoned the county, and the nation, are going through perilous times.

“This is a needy time that we can come together and pray. A lot of stuff is going on in our county, our crime is going up, our children need prayer for the school system, the leaders in our county need prayer, even the world leaders,” Barringer said.

Concluding her plea, Barringer said, “We just want to come and pray and work together and be unified in our county.”

Bringing it to a vote, Commissioner Robert Mims introduced a motion in favor of Ms. Barringer’s request to Chairman Jamie Caudle. Commissioner Jarvis Woodburn seconded the motion.

With no discussion, commissioners proceeded to vote by show of hands, Commissioners’ Robert Mims, Jarvis Woodburn, JD Bricken, Jamie Caudle, Priscilla Little-Reid and Lawrence Gatewood all voted in favor of prayer in the town gazebo taking place every Monday at 5 p.m.

Commissioner Harold Smith was not present at the meeting.
