WADESBORO — One Anson Correctional Institution offender passed after testing positive for COVID-19,
The offender was transferred to the hospital on Dec. 4 and the next day he tested positive. His condition quickly worsened and died on Dec. 6. He was in his early-50s.
“His death is saddening,” said Todd Ishee, commissioner of prisons, in a press release. “We are working very hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons. The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.”
This is the second death related to COVID-19 at Anson Correctional Institution, according to the North Carolina Public Safety website.
There is a 5.7% positive COVID-19 rate at Anson Correctional Institution with 62 active cases and 10 hospitalizations.
Across the state there has been 29 offender deaths, according to the website.
On Dec. 14, NCDPS announced a more aggressive COVID-19 testing plan for prison staff to help slow the spread within the prison system.
