Anson native Mattie Lou Huntley Horne celebrated her 100th birthday Oct. 9.

“It is almost impossible to comprehend all the changes that have taken place in the span of the last 100 years,” said Dottie Ross, a niece of Horne.

Horne can personally attest to those changes. In honor of the grand event, her family held a party at her home in Peachland, complete with cake and lunch. The group arrived from all directions including North Wilkesboro, Charlotte, Monroe, Raleigh and Charleston, South Carolina.

Horne is often asked, “How does one live to be 100?”

“It’s because I’m a country girl,” Horne said.

Ross said being a country girl may mean different things to different people.

“In Mattie Lou’s case, it translates to simple living, hard work, enjoying nature and the company of friends and family,” Ross said. “Not only does she still live at home, she continues to stay on top of current events.”

Ross said the family and community sends congratulations to Horne for 100 years of wonderful country living.
