In May 2018 a prominent real estate agent in Anson County came to my house to talk to us about listing a property for sale that we own in Polkton. After we talked about the sale of the property, I asked him about some property joining our property on the back side of where we live. The owner of that property had recently passed away and I thought it may be up for sale because the timber had been cleared out. There were only a few acres I was interested in, only a fraction of the whole parcel, and it was almost cut off from the remaining property in that track.
The agent told me he had a bid on that property and if I would hold off and let him buy it, he would sell that acreage to me for exactly what he paid for it. He said that he had absolutely no use for that piece of land I was interested in. I told him OK that I would do that and nothing else was said about it.
I kept my word and didn’t inquire about it to anyone else.
It was almost a year later that I saw a bulldozer clearing a road around the property in question.
I called the agent and asked him if he had bought the land and he said that he and his daddy had bought it together. I reminded him that he had promised me the land joining me. He said that his daddy didn’t want to sell it.
I would like to make it clear that this is not about land but the fact that a young man is trying to establish himself in a business based on deceit and lies. I didn’t ask him to make that commitment. He voluntarily committed to it.
With real estate prices what they are now, I don’t believe anyone has to resort to this kind of trickery to make a good living.
