POLKTON — Polkton Baptist hosted their Thanksgiving dinner last week and extended invites to the entire community.

Volunteers served up 300 hot plates of turkey, stuffing, green beans, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce, and rolls. They also gave out baked goods and drinks.

One volunteer was one of Polkton’s newest town council members, Clifton Martin, who was proud to be giving back to the community.

“One of the best things I feel about Anson County is community involvement,” Martin said. “Polkton Baptist is a local church here in Polkton that has gotten very involved in doing things for the community, and this is our first time here having an event like this in which we feed the community. But just from what we’ve seen so far, it’s had great outreach, and we’ve been able to spread the word of God to our community.”

In previous years, they partnered with other churches for Thanksgiving services and dinners, but this year was the first time the Baptist Church did it on its own and focused on community outreach, not just on the members.

“We want to serve our community, want people to know that we’re here to serve people, not to be served,” said Rosemary Greene. “So that’s why we did it as a community outreach. We want people to see the love of Christ through us.”

They plan to do events like this every month for the community.

“For the last few months, the pastor’s been preaching about serving other people, so we wanted to put action to those,” she said. “We can talk about it but until we really step out of the walls of the church, that’s all it is — it’s all talk. So we want to walk the walk along with our talk. So that’s kind of the way it got started. We hope that it will [become] a thing we could do maybe even every month to reach out and serve our community.”
