WADESBORO — In a night filled with patriotism and school pride, the Anson County Bearcats solidified their win against the Albemarle Bulldogs with a shutout score of 41-0 in the annual Gold Star game. The game, played each year in honor of local service members who died in combat, proved to be a back-to-back win for the Bearcats.
The game began with a student led prayer by Natalie Horne with the Anson County Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a special band performance followed with a presentation of the United States flag, unfurled on the field. The Gold Star game, played in remembrance of our fallen military service members, allows four players selected by their coaches to play under the name of one of our nation’s heroes. The four players selected for this year’s game were Aidan Purser, Dequan McKever, Kendrick Maye, and Gabriel Maxwell who played in representation of PFC Michael Evans, PFC Ronnie Burr, PFC Kenneth Foutz, and PVT Jesse Fulk. First responders, who were also honored, and Gold Star Family members were invited free of charge to enjoy the game.
Kendrick Maye, who played in honor of PFC Kenneth Foutz, gained 133 total yards and scored two touchdowns in Foutz’s name.
Another stand out during the game was Jazear Griffin who rushed for 182 yards and scored three touchdowns on only 15 carries. Picking up where he left off last season, The Gold Star Game marked Griffin’s third straight game with at least 115 yards.
An outstanding game was played by the Bearcats, their win never in any doubt as the game progressed. Anson County cheerleaders kept an enthusiastic crowd on their feet as they cheered the Bearcats to victory. The Gold Star Game is sponsored annually by WoodmenLife Insurance Wadesboro Chapter 4 and Marshville Chapter 70. The Anson County Bearcats next game is on September 27 against Central at 7:30 p.m.
